Amazon KDP: ebook and paperback

The most common way to self-publish: free, your book goes on sale on every Amazon in the world.

  1. Create the account

    On kdp.amazon.com you sign in with an Amazon account. Fill in the author details, the bank account for payments and the tax interview. For taxes in your country ask an accountant.

  2. Book details

    Language, title, author name, description (your blurb), up to 7 keywords (what a reader would type to find it) and the most precise categories you can.

  3. ISBN

    The ebook on Amazon does not need one. For the paperback you can use KDP's free ISBN (the publisher shows as «Independently published») or your own.

  4. The ebook file

    In Mitros: Export → Export as a book → ePub. Upload it to KDP and check it with the online Previewer, page by page, also in the phone view.

  5. Ebook cover

    A vertical JPG, 1600 × 2560 pixels recommended. It must read even when tiny: big title, few words. If you are not a designer, a cover artist is worth it.

  6. The paperback

    Pick the trim size (Mitros has 6 × 9", 5 × 8", 15 × 23 cm and A5) and create the print PDF with the same size. On KDP: white or cream paper, glossy or matte cover.

  7. Paperback cover

    One PDF with back, spine and front. The spine width depends on the page count: download the right template from KDP's calculator. Otherwise use KDP's Cover Creator.

  8. Price and royalties

    Ebook: 70% inside a price band (usually from 2.99 up; the top changes by country), 35% outside. Paperback: about 60% of the price minus the printing cost (50% below a certain price). KDP Select (optional): 90 days of ebook exclusivity on Amazon in exchange for Kindle Unlimited. Always check KDP's current table.

  9. Order a proof copy

    Before publishing the paperback order a proof copy: margins, spine and colours can only be judged on paper.

  10. Publish

    Amazon's review takes up to 72 hours. Then create your author page on Author Central (photo, bio, all your books together).
